Think of the bones of your spine like blocks each separated from the next by a sponge (the discs). In a healthy spine the discs act like shock absorbers to cushion the spine. But just like shocks in your car the shock absorbers in your spine can wear out or become damaged. Even with out movement the discs in your spine are under stress! Every day gravity is compressing your spine and slowly wearing out your discs. This compression is made worse by poor posture, injury and age. In the initial stages of spinal compression people often notice stiffness and soreness and often describe it as tension or aching. In later stages the pain and stiffness become worse and other symptoms appear such as numbness and tingling and even shooting pain down the arms or legs.
