How can you tell if the pain you have is caused by sciatica?

Most patients will experience:

  • Numbness, weakness and/or difficulty using your foot or leg
  • A shooting pain that can make it difficult to stand
  • Pain or discomfort in the leg or buttocks that is worsened when sitting
  • A tingling or burning sensation down one or even both legs

If these symptoms sound familiar to you, you are in your 40’s or 50’s and have discomfort when sneezing, coughing or any kinds of movement – you may be suffering from sciatic pain.

What Is Sciatica?

Similar to a large river created by smaller streams, four or five pairs of nerves exit the spine in to the lower back and form the sciatic nerves. There is a soft, pulpy disc between each spinal bone that is often involved. These discs cannot “slip”, it can bulge, herniate or even rupture; putting direct pressure on nearby nerves.

The result? Inflammation and swelling. The pain may also radiate down to the feet and/or toes depending on the location of the affected sciatic nerve root.

What You Can Do

Sciatica will rarely produce permanent nerve damage – especially if you seek prompt chiropractic care. Because chiropractic treatment is so successful in providing relief from sciatic pain, it can even be considered routine.

Your chiropractor can help restore the proper relationships between the bones, nerves and discs, unlike artificial solutions such as drugs or more drastic surgery. The natural approach of chiropractic care, relies on your body’s healing ability and moves at its own pace.
