Choosing the Right Gym

Know What Fits You

Exercising at Gym

When it comes to working out, what matters most to you? Consider the following factors when deciding if a home gym or a gym membership is best for you.

  • Do you prefer the convenience of a home gym? If you have a hectic, busy life that has changing schedules, a home gym may be better for you.
  • Can you commit to a workout facility? Are you motivated to exercise more if you have a financial commitment tied to working out? If so, a membership might be right for you.
  • Do you prefer to work out alone or with other people?

The Right Fitness Environment

Knowing what you’re looking for ahead of time will help you choose a gym you’re comfortable with and motivate you to be your best.

Atmosphere matters. Understand what environment you are comfortable with. Some gyms are geared more toward experienced heavy weight lifters (Golds Gym, etc.) and others are demographic specific (ex. Curves, Spa Lady).

Picking a Membership

Long-term memberships: Be cautious of long-term memberships if you are just starting out. While you give the gym a trial, it’s often better to pay a little more for a month but have the freedom to withdraw on short notice without penalties.

Tip: If you foresee yourself moving away from that gym anytime soon avoid a long-term contract.

Multiple-location memberships: These are beneficial if you’re dedicated to fitness and find yourself in multiple parts of a city on a regular basis.

Budget: Understand your budget and what you expect in return. Some gyms have very diverse amenities for a higher fee. Other gyms with fewer amenities cost less per month.

Cancellation Tip: Know your contract very well, especially the cancellation process. Many gyms require very specific steps to cancel or transfer a membership and you don’t want to end up paying additional fees.
