When Is Wrist Pain Not a Wrist Problem?

When Is Wrist Pain Not a Wrist Problem?

Think of pain in your wrist. So that problem must be in your wrist, right? Not necessarily. Nerve interference elsewhere in the body could be causing or adding to that pain.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is often helped with chiropractic care.

Carpal Tunnel

Let’s take a look at carpal tunnel syndrome. If you feel along the back of your wrist for the carpals, there are eight small bones grouped in two rows. These are held together with ligaments, which form a “tunnel” or a passageway for your median nerve. When the tunnel is narrowed by swelling, the nerve gets compressed causing tingling, pain, and more.

But pain, tingling, or numbness in the wrist can also be caused by nerve interference elsewhere within your body, also known as the “double crush.” In this instance, the median and other nerves running through the wrist are being compressed but the compression may also be coming from the spine, shoulder, neck or the elbow.

Can Chiropractic Help?

In order to resolve carpal tunnel problems, we must examine beyond the wrist. A thorough chiropractic examination of the upper spine, shoulder and elbow will help determine the origins of your problems.
