Couple playingWhat is Vertigo?

Vertigo is the medical term used to describe dizziness in which the person feels like the room is spinning even though they are not moving. One of the most common causes of vertigo is known as Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV). BPPV occurs when small crystals move into canals of the inner ear where they should not be. As they move they brush against receptors that are responsible for helping us maintain balance which causes a sensation of moving or spinning. Vertigo can be very disabling and is often very distressing for the sufferer.

Diagnosing Vertigo

The Dix-Hallpike maneuver is a technique used to diagnose BPPV. During the test the person is sitting while the doctor slightly turns their head while lowering the person into a lying down position. If the person gets dizzy during the test BPPV is likely. Sometimes the person’s eyes will start to flutter side to side during the test (called nystagmus) which also suggests BPPV.

Treating Vertigo

Our doctors provide vertigo treatment in south Calgary using the Epley Maneuver. The treatment method is named after Dr. John Epley who first developed the technique in 1980. During the procedure the doctor moves the patients head through a series of specific positions while monitoring the patient for symptoms in an attempt to slowly move the crystals away from the balance receptors in the inner ear.

Will Vertigo Happen Again After Treatment?

While the treatment is very effective more than one visit may be required to move the crystals enough to completely eliminate vertigo. Also, it is impossible to predict if a person will get another bout of vertigo later in life. Some people never have another episode of vertigo while others experience vertigo from time to time and need more treatment for recurring episodes over time.

What Is The Cost Of The Treatment?

Our South Calgary clinic charges $130 for the initial assessment and $85 for each treatment after the initial visit.
